Stress is something that is grasping more people today than it has ever done in mans history. It seems like as we move forward, and technology moves forward, that we have to work and move faster which ultimately causes stress. Can an ancient practice called yoga and yoga meditation be the cure and reliever that so many people need today?

It is quite strange how the two can mix. How can today’s people do yoga, most people would say, however, more and more people don’t hold such a view. Our views are changing and it is perhaps the most important change happening in the west and globally.

For the last few centuries, the field of science and medication is focused primarily on the physical and forget other aspects of us. For example, a doctor heals problems physically. He provides tablets to fix this, that and the other, but never looks at causes. Instead the doctor focuses on the effects.

This view has been held by the public also. And most people will look at holistic healing methods with a sense of none belief at its validity. In fact most methods are methods which doctors and scientists can measure. Instead they will measure the effects again. Even though this is the case, many studies have confirmed the benefits of yoga, and yoga meditation at creating stress relief.

Yoga, and other practices put there thought on holistic methods of healing; that is looking at the whole person rather than simply there body. This includes mind, body, and soul. And here is where science has for so long neglected.

Whereas simply meditating primarily works with the mind aspect, and bringing balance in your mind, it also creates balance in your body. It synergizes you with all your aspects, and allows peace of mind.

Doing meditation, whether that is yoga meditation or any other form of meditation does indeed produce effects on the body. For example relaxing, taking deep breaths and meditating makes your muscles relax. Yoga meditation allows blood to flow freely in the brain, which makes more of a relaxed body.

Here now, we have balance, and when all 3 aspects of you become more balanced, more peace of mind follows. We take the world with delight, and the things that seemed to cause aggravation and stress before, can now dissolve and seem easier to accomplish.

Yoga meditation is not the only way to create this peace of mind and balance. For example Yoga also looks at your diet, and also the well known of Yoga – the gymnastic style exercises. Even though they may seem complicated, there are many postures that are easy to perform, and will give your mind, body, and soul that balance it needs.

Secret To Breathing And Relaxing With Yoga

Turbaned gurus, sing-song mantras and bodily contortions . . . the promise of true enlightenment and omphaloskepsis (contemplation of the naval) completes the cliche. But don’t knock yoga till you’ve tried it, and then only with respect.

Yoga means to bind together — variously joining sun and moon, left and right, male and female, and any number of yins and yangs — through ascetic techniques of meditation and exercise. The goal is physical and mental balance.

Indian Hatha’ yoga is best known to Westerners. Double-jointedness isn’t a prerequisite, but the classic lotus position, cross-legged on the floor, soles-up on the inner thigh, either comes naturally or doesn’t.

Then there are more magical/mystical varieties of yoga for which people quit jobs and polite society and retreat to the Himalayas. But not everyone follows a spiritual guide beyond the Beltway; they’d rather take up the discipline at a local ashram or the Y.

Committed practitioners claim yoga leads to intuitive awareness, spiritual harmony, perfect concentration. Others use it to lose weight or quit smoking. Some just like the lift they get from yoga asanas (positions) better than breaking into a sweat with pushups. In any case, it can’t hurt, if done in moderation and with proper guidance.

You don’t need to fall into the stress mode of life. You can use breath to relax, rather than stress, your mind and body. Yoga helps you to relearn that natural state that your body and mind want to be in: relaxation.

Deep breathing is both calming and energizing. The energy you feel from a few minutes of careful breathe is not nervous or hyper, but that calm, steady energy we all need. Slow, steady, and quiet breathing gives a message to your nervous system: Be calm.

Whole books have been written on yoga breathing. Here is one 5-minute Breath Break. (Read through the instructions several times before you try the practice.)

1. Sit with your spine as straight as possible. Use a chair if necessary but don’t slump into it. Feet flat on the floor with knees directly over the center of your feet. Use a book or cushion under your feet if they do not rest comfortably on the floor. Hands are on the tops of your legs.

2. Close your eyes gently and let them rest behind closed lids.

3. Think about your ribs, at the front, back, and at the sides of your body. Your lungs are behind those ribs.

4. Feel your lungs filling up, your ribs expanding out and up. Feel your lungs emptying, your ribs coming back down and in. Don’t push the breath.

5. The first few times you do this, do it for 2 to 3 minutes, then do it for up to 5 to 10 minutes. At first, set aside a time at least once a day to do this. When you learn how good it makes you feel, you’ll want to do it at other times as well.

Just as one stressful situation goes into your next challenge, relaxing for a few minutes every day gradually carries over into the rest of your daily life and activities.

Originally, the meditation techniques of yoga were developed primarily as a spiritual practice amongst the polytheist religion of Hinduism, in the Indian sub-continent, around 6000 years ago. In India, or to devout Hindus, success in yoga would ultimately mean that they have escaped the birth and rebirth cycle and become an immortal soul. Today, especially in western countries, the practice of yoga is associated with the benefits that can be derived from standard meditation and its exercises, as much as its other spiritual values. Having said that, yoga does exert a spiritual influence on those who choose to try it and go on to develop their interest in practicing yoga.

There are many different styles and techniques of yoga that you could start with. Quite often for a beginner the style they start with is dependent on the version being taught in local classes for yoga. By the way, if you didnt already know it, a teacher of yoga is called a guru – which generally means teacher – and anyone practicing yoga is known as a yogi. Despite there being many forms of yoga they all seek to enable the yogi to be able to control their mind. Whilst it takes much practice and many years to arrive at this point people do start taking yoga classes because they wish to be able to relax their minds and overcome stress.

Many people nowadays are attracted to yoga because of the stresses and strains of modern living and that at times, in order to carry on coping, we need to find time to mentally relax. Yoga refers the technique of being able to eliminate mental tension at will by being able to slip a second; training your unconscious to slip in and out of the reality we live in. This re-energizes the mind so we can once again face and cope with our reality, without feeling mentally fatigued. Of course, theres no easy route to being able to do this.

The practice of meditative yoga includes; adopting a healthy diet that doesnt put stress on your body, performing exercises to enable your body to relax, learning to take better control of your breathing and purifying your body so that your mind can then relax. In your yoga class you will at least learn to let go of your cares and connect with your higher self, which is widely known as a highly liberating experience for anyone feeling stressed out, depressed or even just a bit down in the dumps.

Meanwhile, until you can begin your yoga classes you might want try a simple technique on your own. Find somewhere thats quiet and calm and just sit down comfortably without strain and close your eyes. Take three deep breaths, and then return your breathing to its normal rate. Next you simply try to clear your mind of all thoughts and sounds. How long that moment lasts is not important and in the beginning you will find it hard to maintain mental silence, but try doing this easy meditation technique daily to help clear your mind and unwind from a stressful day.

Yoga What Exactly Is It

The practice of yoga was developed by an Indian Hindu by the name of Patanjali way back in the year 300. The word itself means discipline and the whole purpose of yoga is to stretch the muscles, increase the levels of concentration and to strengthen the body in general. There is little wonder that such an ancient form of discipline has turned out to be so popular amongst athletes and modern day entertainers. However, yoga can be practiced by anyone as an occasional simple exercise routine or on a regular basis as a total way of life.
